Chapter Fourteen

“You do understand that I don’t have any idea what I’m doing. Not that I don’t want to, although I don’t want to.”

I put the phone down one more time and started to pace again. I swore I heard Matthias sigh, but it might have been my imagination. Mama gave me the same smile she gave me every time I tried to work out a new spell. In spite of its rather worn appearance, it was meant to be encouraging. I deep breathed through the panic churning in my stomach.

Mama hadn’t been as much help as I’d hoped when I woke her up, thinking she might know something about the cup. All the talk about Granny Claire seemed to have bothered her. I wondered if there were things she was in denial about. Maybe we both could work on our issues when all this was over. If Vigil didn’t take care of our issues for us. She told me she’d known little of my grandmother’s practice. It wasn’t the first time I realized Granny Claire had kept her mouth shut about a lot of what she did. And who she was.

I glanced around the table, trying to clear my head. Eddie sat beside me, drooling over the pie in the center of the table. I shoved it toward him.

“Here. Surely you still remember where the forks are, Eddie. Have at it.”

“He can’t.” Matthias gently pushed the pie back from Eddie. “He doesn’t, um, operate in that department anymore.”

My face must have looked as blank as my brain felt because Matthias continued.

“He can’t eat, Rose. He isn’t able to anymore.”

“Oh.” I felt the blush start. Shit, I know that. What was happening to my brain?

Matthias reached for my hand for what I hoped would turn out to be some comfort. Instead he slapped the phone back into it.

“Make the call, Rose. Get it over with.”

His words hit me like a fist in the gut. What was I doing? I was stepping down that same path that killed Granny Claire. Was I crazy? I dialed Irene Joe’s number.

“Hello, Rose.” Her voice had that musical lilt to it that Navajos have, and it took me a minute to realize she shouldn’t have known who was calling. And shouldn’t have known my name. I sure as hell hadn’t recognized hers when I saw it on the paper.

“Hello.” My throat felt dry and scratchy. “Um, I take it this is Irene.”

“Yes.” She chuckled. “This is Irene. I’m assuming you finally read your grandmother’s letter.”

“Well, it only took me twelve years to do it. Hope you haven’t been waiting all the time.”

“I have, but we don’t need to go into that. I can imagine you have a lot of questions.”

“You could say that. What I’m really in need of is a cup my grandmother had.”

“I think your questions can come first.”

I glanced around the table, my gaze landing on Eddie. He was starting to look worse, if that were possible. I’d noticed his words were slowly going back to the garbled speech he’d had when Matthias first raised him.
